This album was really Fifteen’s first “commercial” sounding album, with a very polished tone to it. When you’re used to the older style of Fifteen, this can be a real turn off at first. However, once you hear Jeff’s message, bolder and more daring than ever, you can’t help but love it. There are several songs on this album that address social issues head-on, and have taught me priceless lessons. My favorites are I Am a Man, Man Against Man, Evolve, and Land.
The fourth song on the album deals with what it means to be a “man” and lead a responsible life. Being a woman, I find personal relevance in this song by exchanging “man” for “person”, because, really, a person should be all of these things regardless of their gender. Jeff Ott repeatedly examines the idea of manhood and his struggle with the notion, including an excellent monologue on Allegra addressing the concept of manhood. Once again, I find myself saying of his lyrics, “God, it’s all so true.”
A man should be mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally available
To his partner
A man should be mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally available
To his children
A man should be mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally available
To his community
A man should be mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally available
To the other chiildren in his community
I’m a man,
At least I think
I am A man should be mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally available
To his partner
A man should be mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally available
To his children
A man should be mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally available
To his community
A man should be mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally available
To the other chiildren in his community
A man should abandon Power Over
A man should embrace the notion of Power Of
A man should abandon Power Over
A man should embrace the notion of Power Of
I’m a man, At least I think I am
